Purposeful coffee craftsmanship
grito
While visiting Puerto Rico with his wife, Chris Yerks visited Lares. A beautiful mountain range filled with canopies of green, fresh air and haciendas of coffee. Not only does Lares offer coffee, it is a crucial story of freedom for the Puerto Rican people and one that continues today.
In Lares 1868, the uprising of Puerto Rico took place against the Spanish empire, calling it “Grito de Lares” (cry of Lares). Standing in the Grito de Lares square was a twin of his own heritage, a reminder of a moment he had at Kilmainham Gaol in Ireland, where the Irish died fighting colonialism. The experience of the Puerto Rican people’s cry for freedom stuck in his mind, contemplating how he could take part in the revolution.
He realized he could bring small bits of the revolution through coffee. With this experience and his love of Puerto Rican coffee, he named the company Grito Coffee. Chris’s goal will not be complete until he can see Puerto Rico coffee farming improve, to bring more autonomy to the island. The future of Grito Coffee is bringing fresh Puerto Rican coffee to Minnesota. In the meantime he is roasting Java, Guatemalan, Papua New Guinea, anything he can get his hands on to perfect a craft, ultimately, making some really good coffee.
Common roasts
Sad news for those of us who love really oily beans. Did you know that really oily beans means they lose the varieties and notes of flavor and just become the flavor of “roast” or even burned?
